Tension escalated in Akbarnagar, Lucknow, as the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) initiated a demolition drive targeting approximately 1,200 illegal structures on the riverbed of river Kukrail. The situation turned volatile when police, backed by over 500 personnel from Lucknow Police and the UP Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), allegedly resorted to lathi-charge to quell resistance from locals attempting to obstruct the demolition.
The police registered an FIR against BJP leader Mangal Jha and his 6-7 associates under IPC sections for rioting, breaching peace, and obstructing government officials from performing their duties. Congress spokesperson Mukesh Singh Chauhan and UP Mahila Morcha state president Mamta Choudhary also intervened, urging LDA officials not to proceed with the removal of illegal structures.
Around 1,169 solid constructions and 112 commercial structures had received demolition notices and alternative accommodations based on financial status. The police implemented diversions on various routes leading to Faizabad Road, causing significant traffic disruptions. Normal traffic resumed later, and the court reportedly stayed the demolition at Akbarnagar until January 22. BJP leader Mangal Jha reportedly engaged in a scuffle with the police, supporting the protestors.
